How to Stop Teeth Sensitivity

Teeth sensitivity doesn’t have to be the name of the game in getting whiter teeth. My teeth get very sensitive after I use whitening strips, but I love white teeth, and have no intentions of stopping the whitening, so I had to figure out how to stop teeth sensitivity.

First, I changed my whitening process so it’d be less frequent, and equally effectively. Then I bought a great sensitive toothpaste, the Colgate Sensitive Pro-Relief.Best toothpaste for sensitive teeth after whitening It works better than any of the other sensitive toothpastes I’ve tried, and doesn’t leave that baking soda after-effect feeling in your mouth.

In addition to the toothpaste change, however, is the addition of ACT fluoride rinse, which seems to add another layer of protection from the sensitivity.

I still do get teeth sensitivity after whitening, but with the addition of the ACT and sensitive toothpaste, I was able to stop the teeth sensitivity, or at least lessen it dramatically.

I do try to take good care of my teeth with regular flossing with my favorite OralB Glide floss, and brushing twice a day with an electric toothbrush to help make sure I’m cleaning Best dental floss Glide by OralBmy teeth well – especially those back teeth!

Hope it works for you too! (Keep in mind if you have sensitive teeth and you’re not whitening, or even if you are, you should see your dentist who will know more about your teeth than me!)

Best Teeth Whitening Strips

I love white teeth. I would love to have tan skin and white teeth all year, and although I know I can’t sport the tan healthily all year, I can have the best, whitest teeth possible by using the best teeth whitening strips on the market.

Laugh if you must, but my dentist even marvels at how white my teeth are! Here’s a photo best teeth whitening strips white teeth next to white piece of paperof my teeth next to a white piece of paper so you can see just how white I am able to keep them with the help of whitening strips! My teeth aren’t perfect but they sure are white!

The trick isn’t to go so crazy with whitening strips that your teeth are super sensitive all the time  (how to stop teeth sensitivity), but rather to whiten them, and keep them white with a great everyday toothpaste like the Crest Whitening with Scope toothpaste (yes, that’s what I use).best toothpaste crest whitening

I use the best Crest Whitening strips on the market each time I buy them. Currently I think this is the Intensive Professional Effects Crest White Strips. They are not cheap but I only have to buy them about once a year, so it’s not so bad cost-wise. I don’t use them everyday for a period of time because I’m a wimp and hate tooth sensitivity. I only use them about every other month or every third montCrest White strips besth. But I only use them one time. Yes, one time. Not morning and night, just once. I’ve found a great sensitive toothpaste, but I would prefer to not have sensitive teeth at all! If you’ve never used them before, you may want to use them more than I do in the beginning to get your teeth as white as you can (follow package instructions), and then switch over to my plan.

Best Dry Shampoo No Scalp Irritation

I love to skip the hassle of washing (and especially drying) my hair everyday, but in order to do so, I needed to find the best dry shampoo out there, and one that would cause no scalp irritation. Keep in mind that the best dry shampoo may not be a shampoo at all!

I have sensitive skin, and apparently I also have a sensitive scalp. I’ve tried a number of dry shampoos, including the Alterna Caviar Dry Shampoo recommended by a hair stylist. I hated the smell of the Alterna, so no matter how well it worked, I couldn’t get past the smell to seriously consider it.

Next, I moved on to the popular Batiste dry shampoo. The liked the cherry scented one, and was starting to feel like it really was the best dry shampoo on the market. In fact, if you don’t have sensitive skin, this is a very highly rated popular dry shampoo that works really well, and you might just feel that it is the best dry shampoo for you. But it did irritate my scalp, so I had to keep looking. (For clarification, the irritation it caused was a slight burning right on the top back part of my head – the “crown” area I believe it’s caused – and it went right away when I discontinued using it. No medical visit and it wasn’t a big deal overall for me, in fact it took me awhile to realize it was caused by the dry shampoo!)

NePSSSST dry shampooxt I tried the also popular PSSSST! Dry Shampoo as it’s marketed as the “Original” dry shampoo, and supposedly has been around for more than a decade!

It sprays well and doesn’t seem to coat your hair as heavily as some other dry shampoos, so we were off to a great start. The smell is pretty fresh, and it seemed to do the trick the first time I used it. PSSSST dry shampoo directions on back of bottle

However, after the first time I used it, I didn’t feel like I was getting the same results, I reread the simple directions, and still wasn’t that satisfied. I had no scalp irritation, so that was nice, but it still didn’t seem like the best dry shampoo for me.

So I continued my quest for the best dry shampoo, with no scalp irritation of course. I guess I was really looking for the best dry shampoo for sensitive scalps? Anyways, I had heard that dry shampoos were really just made up of powder.

Johnsons baby powder pure cornstarch best dry shampoo

I read the ingredients on the dry shampoos and realized that they all had corn starch as the first ingredient. Wasn’t that the same thing you used on kids when they’re in diapers??! I dug out an old bottle of it, and sure enough, you can buy Johnson’s Baby Powder that is Pure Cornstarch. I suppose you could get simply cornstarch as well, but I tried the Johnson’s and was really happy with it! No irritation, it worked well, and my hair smelled like baby powder – not too bad! It is important if you use this to smooth it out on your hands so you don’t have any clumps and to make sure your hair isn’t wet. I usually use it before I take a shower, then throw on a cute shower cap, and jump in the shower. Then, when I get out, I do a quick 1 minute blow dry to fluff my hair back up, and it’s good to go with a little touch ups here and here – very quick and easy. My friend swears by using it before bed and then your hair never gets greasy – I keep forgetting to try it! UPDATE! I tried it, and this is by far the best way to use a “dry shampoo” – I will never buy another option again! Sprinkle it on your hands liberally, pat them together, and then pat your hair in all the areas that usually look greasy after a day or two (or if you’re really lucky, three!) of not washing, and then sleep on your pillow as usual, and in the am it’s all absorbed and you have no need to wash your hair! Best dry shampoo ever!!

IMG_4156So after finding out that the powder was really the best dry shampoo for me, I ventured beyond the baby powder to try to find one that smelled a little more grown up than baby powder. The Shower to Shower line has a lot of powders that smell fresh and clean, and so I tried the Morning Fresh one and was quite happy.

So now I switch between the Johnson’s and Shower to Shower depending on my mood. No scalp irritation for me, and powder with pure cornstarch is definitely the best dry shampoo option for me.

Best Gel Nail Polish – No Heat Lamp Required

Gel Nail Polish No Heat Lamp Required

The new gel nail polishes now available last an amazingly long time. But the hassle to take the gel and shellac polishes off, and expense to get it done had me on the search to find the best gel nail polish alternative – one with no heat lamp required, and a simpler removal process.

The polish I love the most that doesn’t have the gel feature is the Sally Hansen Insta-Dry polish – it goes on fast, and really does dry faster than any other polish I’ve ever tried. Best non gel nail polish

The challenge with it, like most nail polishes, is that it just doesn’t last that long. Within a couple of days it starts to come off and my nails just don’t look that great, making me shy to show my hands. It shouldn’t matter, I suppose, but it does to me, so I want nice polished nails!

I went the gel route for a few months, but my nails underneath were clearly getting wrecked, and the time and cost were starting to wear on me.

I began to look at other options when I heard there was a new gel polish that lasted longer without the salon visit. The Miracle Gel by Sally Hansen goes on fast, dries pretty quickly (not Insta-Dry fast tGel Nail Polish No Heat Lamp Requiredhough!), and lasts much longer than the regular non-gel polish. The Miracle Gel applies like normal nail polish, with simple coats, and the top coat seals the gel polish. No heat lamp required! The results last about 5-7 days, and the removal is just like removing regular nail polish – no soaking in acetone for what seems like forever! Plus your nails aren’t tried out and cracking at the removal time.

In the end, I still do the salon gel treatment on special occasions when I know I’ll want my nails to look good worry-free for up to two weeks, but now I use the Miracle Gel when I want them to look good without the cost or extra time commitment. It’s much cheaper and easier!

Best hair dryer for smooth straight hair

Best hair dryer for smooth straight hair

For those on the hunt for smooth straight hair, having the best hair dryer can save you hours each week.  The best hair dryer for smooth straight hair is definitely going to be one with ionic technology. Most of the ionic blow dryers claim to cut drying time in half, and while we didn’t see a 50% decrease in drying time, we did see significant time savings, and smoother straighter hair without additional straightening tools or products.

The prices on ionic hair dryers range significantly from a low of $11 to upwards of $300. We tried many, and found the best hair dryer in the categories of time, value, travel and overall.

Best hair dryers for smooth straight hair by overall winner, fastest drying time, value and travel.

Overall Best Hair Dryer for Smooth Straight Hair 2020:

BaByliss Pro BABNT5548 2000 Watt Ionic Nano Titanium with Integrated Ion Generator Hair Dryer is our favorite again for 2020. After reading many reviews comparing this to the Harry Josh Pro Tools Dyer 2000, we had to try it out. For less than 1/3 of the price, it was best blow dryer overall worth a shot, and we lucked out as the normal $120 price was on sale for only $60. What we were surprised most about with this little beauty was the size – it’s large enough to do the job and small enough to travel with you. It does weigh in a bit more than the average hair dryer, but we’ve read that’s due to the motor, which allows you to switch from hot to cool instantly, and is supposed to outlast an average hair dryer. When we timed the drying efficiency we did see two things – faster drying time and smoother hair.

Best Overall Value:

Revlon 1875W Infrared Hair Dryer. For those with shoulder length hair or shorter, this is a great quick hair dryer. It’s also very reasonably priced for the time saved versus a regular non ionic dryer. We found this Revlon hair dryer for about $20. If you’re on a budget or just want something decent that works well and doesn’t require much of an investment, this may be the best hair dryer to get you that smooth straight hair.

Best Dryer for Travel:

BaByliss. This hair dryer made by well-known brand BaByliss Best blow dryer Babybliss travelpacks well, is light, and will work better than most hotel dryers by far. Also very reasonably priced at $30 or so, this may be the best hair dryer option for you if you’re in need of a travel dryer that packs well, works well and is well priced.

Best Blow Dryer for Smooth Straight Hair FAST!

The best hair dryer by far for fast results was the Dyson SuperSonic hair dryer. Made for speed and precision, this hair dryer does not disappoint. A heavy price point, it gave us pause to even consider the dryer. Testing quickly showed that it’s worth every penny if time is money, and you want smooth straight hair that’s silky smooth in record time. Dyson Supersonic hair dryer fastest dry time

In summary, we found these to be the best hair dryers for smooth straight hair. All three did the job well enough, but have positives and negatives. So what are we using now? We have the BaByliss Pro BABNT558 2000 Watt Ionic Nano Titanium as the daily work horse, the Revlon Hair Dryer as the back up (also used for the kids a few times a week), and the BaByliss Travel dryer as the travel hair dryer.

The hair these were tested on is fine, but wavy, and very plentiful. The kind of hair the stylists say after getting their hands on it, “wow, you have a ton of hair!” (Be glad perms aren’t back in style!)

Best Gifts for Mom

Best Gifts for Mom Avid Book Reader

Each year, the challenge of what to get for mom seems most heightened as Mother’s Day and birthdays approach. We all want to get the best gifts for mom, and maybe even get better gifts than our siblings! Here’s a list of great gifts for mom depending on the type of mom you’re buying for this year.

Best gifts for mom – Stylish

Stylish Great Gifts for Mom. Small Harmony in Straw

Small Harmony in Straw (more expensive than regular Small Harmony but beautiful!)

One of my favorite hand bags is the Small Harmony by Kate Spade. I do not treat purses with care, often overloading them with water bottles, snacks, along with a host of other items. They hold up very well, look great, have the look of a very expensive stylish bag, but the price still comes in as pretty reasonable for the value of the bag. If you are comfortable paying a bit more, you can get the Kate Space Cedar Street Small Harmony bag (see photo) as it’s a gorgeous bag with a lot of life.

If your mom isn’t into bags or purses, many of the stylish items Kate Spade offers are great gifts for mom as they hold up great, and look simple yet sophisticated.

Best gifts for mom – Book Lover

The new kindle - for mom!If your mom loves books and has had a Kindle for awhile, this is a great upgrade for her – with a battery that lasts for months instead of weeks, a lighter weight, and all the same great benefits of her current Kindle, the new Kindle Oasis is a great option. They are not in stock until June 1, but you can pre-order it now, and show her that the order is on its way soon (you know mom secretly wants it first!).

If your mom loves books and hasn’t tried out the Kindle yet, this is a Kindle as a Mother's Day gift ideagreat low-cost option to try. Every avid reader I know who has tried the Kindle has loved it! It’s lighter weight than holding or carrying around a book, and it’s much easier to read at night with a built-in light. In addition to these benefits, if she’s off to a vacation and will read more than one book, the Kindle can be stocked up with hundreds of books without adding any bulk. There are a number of different Kindles out there now, but the basic one is still my favorite escape (I use my iPad for everything else – my Kindle is for my me-time with the books!).

If you do go with the Kindle – be sure to get her the 30 days of Kindle Unlimited – it’s like access to a virtual library via Amazon! Join Amazon Kindle Unlimited 30-Day Free Trial

Great Gifts for Mom – When You’re on a Budget

Great earrings for Mother's Day giftOne of my most favorite pair of earrings look like pearls with small diamonds and are absolutely stunning. Best of all, they cost less than $20. No one ever would guess! I’ve bought these multiple times as gifts, and have a pair myself. I love them! Definitely a great low cost gift idea for mom.

Best Gifts for Mom – Fitness Fun

FitBit bracelet for mom
For the moms who want it all and want to track it, the fitness market has opened up a great range of opportunities. From the FitBit clip on (my favorite, and great for women who don’t want to wear the bracelet style – hint: clip on bra so don’t throw in wash) to the many stylish bracelets, the fitness tracking and now sleep tracking opportunities are just getting started. I see this market continuing to grow as an ever-growing number of people continue to work to better their fitness. Mom will love to challenge herself to take even more steps and compare with friends.

Hope these ideas help you find the best gifts for mom this Mother’s Day!

Better Skin – How to Get Better Skin and Keep it

better skin acne free

It’s only taken me about 40 years to figure out the secret to getting better looking skin. From breakouts, to minor acne, to eczema to dry skin and dark spots, my skin has not been easy. But I have learned a lot, and hopefully my hindsight can be your foresight so you can benefit now, and not have to cake on the makeup or feel self conscious like I did for years wondering how others had such beautiful skin. So here are my tips on how to get better skin fast!

Top 4 ways to get better skin fast

1. Stop washing it so often! I know when I heard of this a few years back I rolled my eyes, but bear with me a moment. Unless you’re sweating or getting pretty dirty overnight, you really don’t need to wash your face every morning. Let those natural oils stay on your face from overnight into the following day. If you have breakouts, just apply a thin layer of the product of your choice before applying sunblock, foundation, etc. As you’ll see in number two, I swear by Clearasil Ultra Rapid Action Vanishing Acne Treatment Cream.

2. Find your breakout solution and stick to it. I’m a big fan of benzoyl peroxide. The Clearasil Ultra Rapid Action Vanishing Acne Treatment Cream goes on clear and really works wonders. If my skin is even starting to appear like it’s going to start giving me trouble, I apply it under makeup and/or before bed as needed. It doesn’t dry my skin out as other products (especially if you follow the washing advice in #1 above), and really does work fast.

3. Find a great exfoliation tool. I mean one of those that says only to use it up to 3 times a week max. You can use one of the weaker ones as your daily face wash, but I’m talking about a good strong one to renew your skin. I recently found Rodan & Fields’ Micro-Dermabrasion Paste and I’m obsessed with it. My skin has never looked better and I’m psyched! I use it every three days or so in the morning after showering and before drying my face (my skin can be sensitive so I use a limited amount and gently rub it into my skin while it’s still wet). If you’re not up for trying this one, a lot of people swear by Paulas Choice Skin Perfecting Exfoliant

4. Use a good sunblock or light foundation with sunblock. I like a light foundation or tinted moisturizer. My current favorite for better skin is Smashbox BB or the CC as it has dark spot correcting added right in, as well as sunblock. If you’re not sure on your coloring, stop by an Ulta or Sephora if you have one nearby and the people there will help you pick. I use the color fair and love it. It includes an spf, which is great for everyday use. I use it all through the winter – don’t forget the sun is out then too, even when there’s snow on the ground! Then in the summer stock up on other sunblock to make sure you’re protected all over (review of best aerosol sunblocks). If you’re a sun worshipper (I am myself), or even if you’re not, don’t forget to moisturize!

Now that your face is fabulous, did you read about the best dry shampoo on the market?

Best Sunblock Aerosol Sprays

Let me start by saying I absolutely love the aerosol sunblock sprays. I don’t know how anyone cannot love them. They are the best sunblocks – easy to use, easy to reapply, and they work great! Yes, you have to make sure you spray all over and don’t miss a spot, but you have to do that with sunblocks that get rubbed on too, and this way the sunblock is not all over your hands too! Below are the Best Sunblock Aerosol Sprays on the market.

Coppertone Sport – best sunblock for active fun in the sun.

Best Sunblock for the Kids

Coppertone Sunblock. Period. First, there is Coppertone Water Babies, which is fantastic – great coverage, works great even on sensitive skin, and I think you can start using it when your baby is only six months old. It has been a lifesafer for me and my kids. I have two pretty pale kids, and one has blond hair and blue eyes, so I’m extremely diligent about sun protection. I swear by the Coppertone brand. Now that the kids are a little older, they don’t want to be seen with me applying the water babies sunblock, so I changed to the Coppertone Kids a few years ago.

I spray it on once a day and they’re covered. If we’re in warmer climates (Carribean) or in stronger sun zones, I reapply it after lunch. Even with swimming, tubing, beach fun, toweling off and more swimming, I’ve never had an issue with either kids getting a sunburn. If I can’t find the Coppertone Kids, I grab the Coppertone Sport, which also works great. None of these rub off onto your swimsuit or towel like some other brands do. I even spray them right onto my kids faces (they are old enough to squeeze their eyes shut, pull in their lips and exhale as I spray). The spray doesn’t get into their eyes and works great.

Best (non) Sunblock for you? 🙂

Bain de Soleil Tanning Spray. For those who want to expose their skin to a bit more of the sun, and get that golden glow despite the known risks, the Bain de Soleil Spf 4 works great. I can’t help but worship the sun on those winter getaways to warmer climates, and the Bain de Soleil kept me from burning, but still allowed me to get a nice golden tan.

I’ve tried the Banana Boat, Neutrogena, No Ad, and generic Target aerosol sunblock sprays, and still find the above to be the best sunblock aerosol sprays.

Great Watches for Men Under $200

best watches for men

If you’re looking to step up your watch game to the next level, these great watches for men are a great place to start. Although many great watches for men are offered at higher and lower levels, a watch just under the $200 price point offers a lot for the money.

One of my most favorite watch brands at any price is Citizen. They are smart, sleek, sophisticated, priced fairly, and built to last.

Seiko: Great Watches for Men under $200

. Seiko, a well-known watch brand, offers many different price points for their watches, and when you spend in the $100-$200 range, you get a lot for the money.

The Seiko SKA413 Adventure stainless steel kinetic diver watch is an excellent choice for divers. It is not only rugged, but high quality and sophisticated. It’s resilient to bumps and great watches for men Seikoscratches, and the strap is ample and comfortable. It’s not quite Omega diver quality, but the price isn’t Omega style either. And it’s quite precise! After three months of daily wear the watch has gained only 5 seconds. Its style, workmanship, quality are all superior to others in similar price points. It’s a great watch at a great price, especially for divers.

The Men’s Seiko SNA411 Flight Alarm Chronograph watch is a beautiful watch for the pilot or aviation lover – or the engineer or anyone who loves things precise! At less than 5% of the cost of a Breitling watch, the Seiko SNA411  is a wonderful alternative. The photo does not do it justice – the face has depth and it has much more pizzazz than the photo offers. Seiko great watches for menThe face is almost 1/2″ thick – so it’s very substantial. The look is classy, and the raised sides likens the watch to a much more expensive version. It features an alarm, date window, and a stopwatch that can measure in 1/5 of a second increments. The face is Hardlex crystal, and very scratch resistant. Water resistance is to 200 meters, so swimming, showering, snorkeling, and even skin diving or water sports are not a problem with this great watch.

Citizen: Great Watches for Men under $200.

Citizen, known throughout the world as a high-quality watch, offers great watches under the $200 price point. And the newish Eco-Drive uses the power of light from the sun or other sources of light and converts it into energy so the watches never need a battery.

The Citizen Mens AT0200-05E Eco-Drive stainless steel watch  was inspired by the military, with its green canvas band and round dial and red contrasting second hand. As great watches for men citizenan eco-drive watch, it runs on natural sunlight or indoor light and does not need batteries. It’s water resistant to 330 feet – great for snorkeling, swimming or showering, but not for scuba diving. It’s very easy to set and forget – and because it’s an eco-drive watch, you don’t have to wear it every day, and the light will help it keep it’s charge. The lighting is subtle for viewing in the dark. The wristband isn’t very big, so those with larger wrists may need an upgrade on the watch band. All in all, it’s a great watch for under $200.

Another great Citizen watch is the AO9000-06B Eco-drive stainless steel watch. Its simple beauty lends to a timeless look of sophistication and class. Most people will guess you spent about $1,000 on this watch, it’s that gorgeous.  This is a simple watch for telling time without all the fuss and ruggedness of other watches. Like a fine piece of jewelry, it must Citizen great watches for menbe catered to, but only to protect it from water. Otherwise it’s fairly rugged, and as an eco-drive, no batteries are required. This is a great watch for someone who appreciates simple sophistication and has class without the excessive bling. The watch looks great with business casual or professional attire. The price point is excellent.

Want something under $100, try these watches for men under $100.

Great Watches for Men under $100

Men's watches under $100

There are a number of great men’s watches for under $100

Seiko Watches for men under $100. Offering a number of options, Seiko is a timeless choice that ignites a love of watches for many men. They are durable, look great, and last. When you buy a Seiko, you know you’re getting a good quality watch.  There are a number of options for under $100, and many options for if/when you’re interested in spending more. Note – the retail value of many of these watches is over $100, but they are often on sale for the price point under $100. As of this publish date, all are under $100.

The Seiko SNK805 green / SNK807 blue / SNK809 black is a great watch. As with most watches, the photo online doesn’t do it justice. The watch has a nice weight to it, and is a great bargain for a Seiko. The luminous hands last for a good 20 minutes, and the watch comes with a three-year warranty. With a slight military influence, it has a rugged yet sophisticated look and feel.

The Seiko SNDC33 with the chronograph dial watch is another great option for a Seiko under $100. If you want a chronograph but one that isn’t the size of NASA, this is a great option. Most men will find this the perfect in size – not huge, but not too small either. The time and date are easy to set, the luminescence is great making the three hands easily visible in the dark. The band is stiff as you need to break it in a bit, but it’s built to last, and is a great first “real” watch.

The Seiko SNE098 two-tone stainless steel watch usually hovers right around the $100 price point, and offers the sleek bracelet styling. This is a gorgeous watch with the gunmetal sun ray dial and steel band. It’s water resistant to 330 feet, so great for pool play and showers or snorkeling. It’s also a great choice if you want something beyond the metal or canvas band, as it’s a great comfortable choice. If you prefer a Seiko with all silver or all gold coloring, those are available as well.

G-Shock Watches for Men under $100. Casio has made a great comeback with their G-Shock watches hitting the style market not long ago. They are sleek, fun and very practical as they are extremely rugged.

If you want a watch for under $50 that’s easy to read and rugged, the Casio Men’s DW9052-1V G-Shock Black Stainless Steel and Resin Digital Watch is a great choice. It has a great durability, excellent time functions, it’s easy to read the display, has a comfortable band, and is an overall fantastic value. The battery is rated for two years, and the water resistance includes recreational scuba diving and water sports. It’s a great first watch, or a great simple reliably rugged watch.

The Casio GA-110TS-1A4 G-Shock analog digital watch  is another great G-Shock under $100 to consider, and especially for those who travel frequently and who prefer an analog watch. It’s shock-resistant like all the G-Shocks, but also features 29 time zones (48 cities), daylight savings on/off, home city/world time city toggling, plus five daily alerts with one snooze alarm. It’s water resistance goes to 660 feet, so serious water sports are not a problem.

The Casio G-Shock Limited Edition GA110GB-1A men’s watch is usually hovering around the $100 price point, and offers a lot of watch for the money. Its rugged and stylish look offers a lot of watch for the money. If having a statement watch on your wrist is important, this is a great watch to consider. It has multiple alarms and a snooze alarm, all the bells and whistles of a typical G-Shock, and it looks great. For all the flash included, it’s actually not super easy to actually read the time, so it may be suited best for those who don’t need reading glasses quite yet.

Still not sure what to get? There are many watches for men under $100 to choose from, and this blog simply focuses on watches for men under $100 – willing to spend a little more? Here’s a list of men’s watches under $200!
